My dentist recommended me to undergo a tooth scaling. Is this really necessary?

he says that i have mineral deposits in between my teeth. But what do these mineral deposits look like? I had a careful look and I see no mineral deposits. Also during the whole 18 years of my life, i have never undergone a tooth scaling. I have never had any cavities and my teeth are not crooked. they are well formed and I brush regularly and properly as i am very particular about the health of my teeth. i drink lots of milk and eat lots of veges and fruits and i hardly eat sweets.

also, my 105 year old great grand mother has never had any of this tooth scaling but her teeth are perfect. same as my gradfather who had perfect teeth until he passed away. and they both have never gone for tooth scaling.

a final point is that my father who also has perfect teeth said that his tooth problems emerged only after he had a tooth scaling.

Can anybode give me some advice on this? Do i need a tooth scaling? what are the side effects? and what happens if i don't do it? thanks

well...

it is not posible to diagnose if u need scaling or not without examine u clinically..if there's a picture of ur mouth, then differential diagnosis can be given

scaling is basicly done if u have calculus (yellowish or even dark brownish to black deposit sticking on ur tooth, usually at the salivary duct opening:surface of ur upper second molar facing the cheek, surface of ur lower incisors facing the tongue) and even if u has stains on ur teeth(usually caused by cigarette smoking or coffee) which scaling can help to removed them

this deposits will make plaque (food debris) easier to stick

to ur tooth..thus making the condition of the gum worsen

u might at first get gingivitis (the 1st sign: when u brush ur teeth ur gum bleeds) then will worsen from swelling gum to periodontitis ( inflammation of tissue holding ur teeth=periodontal tissue; pdl, alveolar bone,) which will later cause ur teeth to be mobile..well that the worst case scenario

most people will need scaling every 6months..

most people will complaint of teeth hypersensitivity after scaling.. u can help to reduce this by either applying tooth paste on the area of sensitivity and leave it there..

the sensitivity will dissapear/decrease in a few days.. using sensodyne tooth paste will gurantee no sensitivity..i've used them once..

i've never known that tooth scaling can cause more tooth problems...there's no journal which said so

though ultrasonic scalers r not to be used on patients who have heart pacemakers.. and special precautions on patients having congenital heart problems and a few other problems

for the fact that ur grandparents who have great teeth..i would say one: at their time food is not filled with sugar and so forth, 2nd genetics do play part in ur tooth structure and saliva(cleans, protects ur teeth)..

but to me no harm done doing scaling..

whether u need scaling or not..depends on clinical judgement

if u dont trust ur first dentist then try to ask for 2nd opinion from other dentist
Reply:This is a routine procedure which should be done on most everyone, typically every six months. Calcium phosphate from saliva precipitates on teeth, and can trap bacteria which cause decay; since teeth are made of calcium phosphate (with a different crystal structure), the stuff is basically invisible.
Reply:YOU NEED A 2nd OPINION!!!! It won't hurt to get and there are too many crooked DDS out there.

PLEASE get a 2nd opinion.
Reply:you should get a second openion
Reply:Tooth scaling or root planing or deep cleaning is a method used to remove calculus on your teeth.

If your gums are red and/ or swollen, if it bleeds when you brush or floss, shiny (gums should have the appearance of an orange fruit skin) you might very well need this treament. You don't have to have any cavities to undergo this treatment.
